Is stamp duty the same across all of Punjab?

Yes. Stamp duty in Punjab is set by the state government and applies uniformly across all districts — whether the property is in Chandigarh (UT, different from Punjab), Mohali, Ludhiana, Amritsar or Jalandhar. Local bodies do not charge separate stamp duty.

Can stamp duty be paid online?

Yes. Punjab, Haryana and Delhi all offer e-stamping through the SHCIL (Stock Holding Corporation of India) portal and state-specific portals. E-stamp paper is legally equivalent to physical stamp paper and is preferred for high-value transactions.

What happens if I pay less stamp duty than required?

Underpayment of stamp duty is a deficient stamp, which makes the document inadmissible in court and can attract a penalty of up to 10× the shortfall amount. Always pay on the higher of sale price and circle rate.

Does stamp duty apply on property gifted to a family member?
