Farm Worker (Seeri) Agreement

Answer what you can. The draft beside these boxes is rewritten as you go, so you can see exactly what each answer does to the document.

What you type stays in this browser. Moving to a new step asks this site to draw it, but nothing is kept anywhere until you choose to keep a copy — and closing this tab loses it.

Your answers

Nothing answered yet. There are 6 questions on this form.

Still to answer

6 answers are still to come.

Nothing is amiss in what you have written. The document is simply not finished, and the draft marks each gap where an answer will go.

  1. The farmer and the worker
  2. Work and wages
  3. Advance, leave and ending
  4. Signing

Step 1 of 4

The farmer and the worker

For example: Nirmal Singh

What is the farmer's address?Needed

A number somebody can be reached on. Ten digits is the usual Indian form, and a country code in front of it is fine if you want it there.

For example: 98140-00000

For example: Jagtar Singh, son of Mal Singh

Clearing empties every box on this form, and there is no way back to what was in them.

The live draft

The draft, as it stands

This is the document as far as you have reached, not the whole of it yet — the rest appears as you answer more questions. It is rewritten every time you change an answer.

A long blank line — __________ — stands wherever an answer has not been given. It is left that visible on purpose, so an unfinished document cannot be mistaken for a finished one.

No answer has been given, so every place a detail belongs is standing blank. The shape of the document is worth reading even now.

FARM WORKER (SEERI) AGREEMENT

BETWEEN

__________, of __________, mobile __________ (the "Farmer");

AND

__________, of __________, mobile __________ (the "Worker").

  1. 1. THE ENGAGEMENT

1.2 The Worker states that he is an adult, over eighteen years of age, and is entering this agreement of his own free will, having understood it.

1.3 The Worker works under the Farmer's reasonable instructions on the farm. The Farmer shall not make him do work that is unsafe or unlawful, or work for any other person.

  1. 2. WAGES

2.2 The wage shall not be less than the minimum wage for farm work that applies to the Worker under the law for the time being in force. If it ever is, the minimum wage is the wage.

  1. 3. HOURS, REST AND LEAVE
  1. 4. ADVANCE: NO BOND

4.2 No advance, loan or debt, now or later, binds the Worker to work for the Farmer, stops him leaving, or may be worked off by his labour or his family's. Any advance may be recovered only as an ordinary debt in the manner the law allows, and never by forcing the Worker or any member of his family to work or by keeping them on the farm against their will.

4.3 The Worker is free to leave at any time on the notice in clause 6. The Worker's family is not bound to work for the Farmer, and the Worker's children shall not be made to work on the farm in place of school.

  1. 5. INJURY, ILLNESS AND SAFETY

5.1 The Farmer shall keep the machinery, the animals and the work reasonably safe. If the Worker is hurt at work, the Farmer shall at once get him medical treatment and pay for it, and shall keep paying his wage for the days he cannot work because of the injury, up to the end of the Period.

5.2 If the Worker falls ill and cannot work, the Farmer shall pay his wage for up to seven such days in the Period on his producing a note from a doctor or the health worker.

  1. 6. ENDING THE ENGAGEMENT

6.2 The Farmer may end the engagement without notice only for serious misconduct, such as theft or violence, after letting the Worker answer. He shall still pay all wages earned up to that day.

6.3 If the Worker lives in a room on the farm, he shall have at least the same number of days as the notice to move out, and shall not be turned out by force.

  1. 7. DISPUTES

7.1 The parties shall first try to settle any dispute by talking, if they wish with the help of respected elders or the village panchayat.

  1. 8. GENERAL

8.1 This is the whole agreement between the Farmer and the Worker. Any change must be in writing and signed by both. The Worker has been given a copy.

Reading costs nothing. Keeping a copy needs an account.

The opening of the draft is on this page as you answer it. Once every answer is in, the button below opens the whole draft, watermarked — still without an account. Printing it, or keeping a clean copy, is where an account is asked for. That is the whole arrangement.

A kept copy has to belong to somebody, and that is the reason for the account. There is nothing further to it.
