Police Complaint (General)

Answer what you can. The draft beside these boxes is rewritten as you go, so you can see exactly what each answer does to the document.

What you type stays in this browser. Nothing is sent anywhere until you choose to keep a copy — and closing this tab loses it.

Your answers

Nothing answered yet. There are 24 questions on this form.

Still to answer

20 answers are still to come.

Nothing is amiss in what you have written. The document is simply not finished, and the draft marks each gap where an answer will go.

For example: Division No. 5, Ludhiana

A calendar date — the day, the month and the year. Dates in a document like this are read against one another, so a date typed here can change what another date is allowed to be.

For example: 24 August 2026

How is the complaint given?Needed

For example: Manjit Kaur

For example: wife of Balbir Singh

A plain number. Digits only — no words and no units beside them.

For example: 58

What is your address?Needed

A number somebody can be reached on. Ten digits is the usual Indian form, and a country code in front of it is fine if you want it there.

For example: +91 98723 11418

An email address somebody actually reads. Notices under a document like this can be sent to it, so a working one matters more than a tidy one.

For example: manjit.kaur221@example.com

For example: cheating by a dealer over a booked car

Which kind of wrong is it?Needed

Names, parentage and addresses where known, and a description of anyone you do not know.

A long answer. Several lines are fine, and a break you make between paragraphs is the break the document keeps.

For example: Ravinder Singh son of Gurnam Singh, proprietor of Sunrise Motors, Ferozepur Road, Ludhiana, and a salesman who gave his name as Pappu

A calendar date — the day, the month and the year. Dates in a document like this are read against one another, so a date typed here can change what another date is allowed to be.

For example: 12 June 2026

Tell it in order, in complete sentences, as it prints after the date: who said or did what, what you paid or gave, what was promised, and what the threats or words were.

A long answer. Several lines are fine, and a break you make between paragraphs is the break the document keeps.

For example: Ravinder Singh took Rs 2,50,000 from me as the booking amount for a car, promised delivery within 30 days and gave a receipt. No car was delivered, the showroom is now shut, and he has stopped answering my calls.

Money lost, property lost, injury, or the fear caused, in words that read after The loss or harm caused to me is.

A long answer. Several lines are fine, and a break you make between paragraphs is the break the document keeps.

For example: Rs 2,50,000 paid as booking amount and not returned

Names, addresses and telephone numbers; leave it blank if nobody.

A long answer. Several lines are fine, and a break you make between paragraphs is the break the document keeps.

For example: my brother Harjit Singh, House No. 14, Model Town, Ludhiana, 98760 22110

Receipts, messages, call records, bank statements, photographs, recordings.

A long answer. Several lines are fine, and a break you make between paragraphs is the break the document keeps.

For example: the booking receipt, my bank statement showing the transfer, and WhatsApp messages from 12 June to 30 July 2026

Earlier complaints, notices, helpline calls; if none, write that none has been taken.

A long answer. Several lines are fine, and a break you make between paragraphs is the break the document keeps.

For example: I sent a notice by registered post on 5 August 2026, which was not answered

For example: Consumer complaint No. 211 of 2026 before the District Consumer Commission, Ludhiana

For example: copies of the receipt, the bank statement and the messages

For example: Manjit Kaur

For example: Kuldip Singh Sandhu

An email address somebody actually reads. Notices under a document like this can be sent to it, so a working one matters more than a tidy one.

For example: kuldip.sandhu@example.com

Which consent statement should print?Needed

The live draft

The draft, as it stands

This is the whole document, not a sample of it. It is rewritten every time you change an answer.

A long blank line — __________ — stands wherever an answer has not been given. It is left that visible on purpose, so an unfinished document cannot be mistaken for a finished one.

No answer has been given, so every place a detail belongs is standing blank. The shape of the document is worth reading even now.

  1. 7. My request. Please record this information as a first information report under section 173(1) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, give me a copy of it free of cost under section 173(2), investigate the offence, record the statements of the witnesses named above, and secure the records and articles listed in paragraph 5 before they are lost. If the facts disclose only an offence for which the police cannot register a first information report without an order, I ask that the information be entered in the station's register and that I be told in writing what further step is open to me. __________
  1. 8. If it is not recorded. If the information is not recorded, I will send its substance in writing by post to the Superintendent of Police under section 173(4) of that Sanhita, and if that too brings no action, I will apply to the Magistrate, who may order an investigation under section 175(3) after considering my application, supported by affidavit, and the submission of the officer in charge.
  1. 9. Other proceedings, and the truth of this account. What I have stated is true to my own knowledge, except where I say I was told it, and I have left out nothing I know about the matter.

LEGAL BASIS

Punjab: The information is received by the officer in charge of a police station under section 173(1) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, orally or electronically and wherever the offence happened; electronic information is signed within three days, and a copy goes to the informant free of cost under section 173(2). Against a refusal to record it, the route is a written complaint by post to the Superintendent of Police under section 173(4), and then an application supported by affidavit to the court of a Magistrate empowered under section 210, which may order investigation under section 175(3). The Sanhita has been in force since 1 July 2024. A police complaint decides no civil right: a claim for money or property is still for the civil court.

Chandigarh: The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 is central law and applies in the Union Territory in the same terms from 1 July 2024. The officer in charge of the police station receives and records the information under section 173(1) and gives a free copy under section 173(2). Against a refusal to record it, the route is a written complaint by post to the Superintendent of Police under section 173(4), and then an application supported by affidavit to the court of a Magistrate at Chandigarh empowered under section 210, which may order investigation under section 175(3). A police complaint decides no civil right, which remains for the civil court at Chandigarh.

Reading costs nothing. Keeping a copy needs an account.

The opening of the draft is on this page as you answer it. Once every answer is in, the button below opens the whole draft, watermarked — still without an account. Printing it, or keeping a clean copy, is where an account is asked for. That is the whole arrangement.

A kept copy has to belong to somebody, and that is the reason for the account. There is nothing further to it.
