Nothing is amiss in what you have written. The document is simply not finished, and the draft marks each gap where an answer will go.

A calendar date — the day, the month and the year. Dates in a document like this are read against one another, so a date typed here can change what another date is allowed to be.

For example: 20 November 2026

For example: Ludhiana

How will the letter be sent?Needed
To whom at the bank is it addressed?Needed

For example: Punjab National Bank

What is the address of the branch?Needed

For example: Gurpreet Kaur Sandhu

For example: daughter

What is your address?Needed

An email address somebody actually reads. Notices under a document like this can be sent to it, so a working one matters more than a tidy one.

For example: gurpreet.sandhu@example.com

A number somebody can be reached on. Ten digits is the usual Indian form, and a country code in front of it is fine if you want it there.

For example: +91 98150 22418

For example: Harbans Singh Sandhu

A calendar date — the day, the month and the year. Dates in a document like this are read against one another, so a date typed here can change what another date is allowed to be.

For example: 3 September 2026

For example: Dayanand Medical College Hospital, Ludhiana

For example: No. D-2026-014872 issued on 12 September 2026 by the Municipal Corporation, Ludhiana

For each: the receipt number and the amount; use the last digits only if the number is long.

A long answer. Several lines are fine, and a break you make between paragraphs is the break the document keeps.

For example: Receipt no. 40718 for 300000 rupees and receipt no. 40719 for 150000 rupees.

What kind of deposit is it?Needed

A calendar date — the day, the month and the year. Dates in a document like this are read against one another, so a date typed here can change what another date is allowed to be.

For example: 12 March 2024

An amount in rupees. Commas and a ₹ sign are both fine — write it the way you would write it anywhere else, and the document is given the tidy form of it.

For example: 450000

A calendar date — the day, the month and the year. Dates in a document like this are read against one another, so a date typed here can change what another date is allowed to be.

For example: 12 March 2027

How is the deposit held?Needed
In what capacity do you claim?Needed

For example: Mrs Surinder Kaur Sandhu, wife

What is the position of the other heirs?Needed
Where is the original deposit receipt?Needed

For example: I understand that a loan was taken against this deposit and I ask you to adjust it first.

What do you ask the bank to do with the deposit?Needed

For example: Gurpreet Kaur Sandhu

For example: HDFC Bank, Sarabha Nagar branch, Ludhiana

For example: 7719

Anything the other fields did not cover; leave blank if nothing.

A long answer. Several lines are fine, and a break you make between paragraphs is the break the document keeps.

For example: Please send me your reply by email as well as by post.

Number each paper: death certificate, the original deposit receipt or the indemnity, your identity and address proofs with Aadhaar masked, the bank's claim form, proof of heirship, letters of no objection and a cancelled cheque.

A long answer. Several lines are fine, and a break you make between paragraphs is the break the document keeps.

For example: 1. Death certificate. 2. Original deposit receipts 40718 and 40719. 3. My PAN card and passport copy. 4. The bank's claim form, signed. 5. Cancelled cheque of my account.

For example: Kuldip Singh Sandhu

An email address somebody actually reads. Notices under a document like this can be sent to it, so a working one matters more than a tidy one.

For example: kuldip.sandhu@example.com

Which consent statement should print?Needed

The live draft

The draft, as it stands

This is the whole document, not a sample of it. It is rewritten every time you change an answer.

A long blank line — __________ — stands wherever an answer has not been given. It is left that visible on purpose, so an unfinished document cannot be mistaken for a finished one.

No answer has been given, so every place a detail belongs is standing blank. The shape of the document is worth reading even now.

  1. 7. What I ask you to do.

(a) Mark the deposit as that of a deceased depositor, and do not renew it, roll it over or pay interest to any other person from today.

(b) Tell me in writing the amount payable on the date of death and the amount payable today, with the interest worked out at each date and the rate on which you have worked it.

(c) Tell me whether any charge or reduction in interest applies because the deposit is closed before it matures on account of the death, and the rule on which you rely.

(d) Give me the list of forms and papers you need, and say whether you will settle on the papers I name or ask for a court certificate.

(e) Pay the amount due to the account described in paragraph 8, together with the interest earned and any interest credited since the death.

  1. 10. If the claim is not settled. If you reject the claim or do not reply within 30 days, I will take the matter to the Reserve Bank's Ombudsman, and I am free to bring a consumer complaint before the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.

Please acknowledge this letter and tell me the name and telephone number of the officer who will handle the claim.

ENCLOSURES

__________

LEGAL BASIS

Punjab: A bank may pay a deposit on the death of the depositor to the nominee, or to the surviving holder of a joint deposit, and the payment discharges the bank; the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 contains the provisions on nomination of deposits. A nominee is paid so that the bank is discharged and does not by that fact alone become the owner as against the other heirs; the order in which a Hindu's heirs inherit is set by sections 8 and 15 of the Hindu Succession Act, 1956, and other communities follow their own law. Where there is no nominee, the bank may ask for proof of heirship or for a succession certificate, which the District Judge grants under sections 372 and 373 of the Indian Succession Act, 1925. The bank decides the claim through its branch manager and nodal officer. A claimant who is not satisfied can complain to the Reserve Bank's Ombudsman under the Reserve Bank - Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026, after a rejection or 30 days without a reply, and within 90 days, or file a consumer complaint before the District Commission under section 35 of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. A dispute among the heirs is decided by the civil court, and an appeal goes to the District Judge or to the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Chandigarh: The same provisions apply to a bank in the Union Territory: nomination under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, inheritance under the personal law of the deceased, and a succession certificate granted by the District Judge, Chandigarh under sections 372 and 373 of the Indian Succession Act, 1925. The bank decides the claim through its branch manager and nodal officer. A claimant who is not satisfied can go to the Reserve Bank's Ombudsman under the Reserve Bank - Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026, or file a consumer complaint before the District Commission serving the Union Territory under section 35 of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. A dispute among the heirs is decided by the civil court at Chandigarh, with an appeal to the District Judge, Chandigarh, or to the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Reading costs nothing. Keeping a copy needs an account.

The opening of the draft is on this page as you answer it. Once every answer is in, the button below opens the whole draft, watermarked — still without an account. Printing it, or keeping a clean copy, is where an account is asked for. That is the whole arrangement.

A kept copy has to belong to somebody, and that is the reason for the account. There is nothing further to it.
