PPF, Post Office and NSC Claim without a Nominee

Answer what you can. The draft beside these boxes is rewritten as you go, so you can see exactly what each answer does to the document.

What you type stays in this browser. Moving to a new step asks this site to draw it, but nothing is kept anywhere until you choose to keep a copy — and closing this tab loses it.

Your answers

1 of 4 answered.

Still to answer

3 answers are still to come.

Nothing is amiss in what you have written. The document is simply not finished, and the draft marks each gap where an answer will go.

  1. The office and the accounts
  2. The holder who died
  3. You and the other heirs
  4. Payment, affidavit and date
  5. Records

Step 1 of 5

The office and the accounts

For example: Head Post Office, Sector 17, Chandigarh

Address of that officeNeeded

A long answer. Several lines are fine, and a break you make between paragraphs is the break the document keeps.

For example: PPF account 1234567890; National Savings Certificates nos. 11A 123456 to 11A 123460.

More details — you may leave these

For example: Postmaster

Clearing empties every box on this form, and there is no way back to what was in them.

The live draft

The draft, as it stands

This is the document as far as you have reached, not the whole of it yet — the rest appears as you answer more questions. It is rewritten every time you change an answer.

A long blank line — __________ — stands wherever an answer has not been given. It is left that visible on purpose, so an unfinished document cannot be mistaken for a finished one.

PPF, POST OFFICE AND NSC CLAIM WITHOUT A NOMINEE

Claim by the legal heirs of a holder who left no nominee

To: The Postmaster, __________, __________

Sir or Madam,

  1. 6. What I ask you to do.

(a) Mark each account and certificate as that of a holder who has died, and do not pay any other person from today.

(b) Tell me in writing the claim form and every paper you need from me and from the other legal heirs, and whether you will settle on the papers I name or ask for a court certificate.

(c) Tell me the amount payable on the date of death and the amount payable today, with the interest worked out at each date, the rate on which you have worked it, and any rule that stops or changes the interest after the death.

(d) Pay the amount due to the account described in paragraph 7.

(e) Give me a statement of the interest paid, in the form you issue to holders.

  1. 8. What I accept. I understand that you will pay so that you are safely discharged, and that this does not by itself decide who owns the money as against the other legal heirs. If you pay and it is later found that someone else had a better right, I will account to that person for what I received.
  1. 9. If the claim is not settled. If you reject the claim or do not reply within the time allowed, I will take the matter to the senior officer of your office, and I am free to bring a consumer complaint before the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.

Please acknowledge this letter and tell me the name and telephone number of the officer who will handle the claim.

ENCLOSURES

LEGAL BASIS

Punjab: A Public Provident Fund account is governed by the Public Provident Fund Act, 1968 and the Public Provident Fund Scheme, 2019, a post office account by the Government Savings Banks Act, 1873 and the rules under it, and a National Savings Certificate by the Government Savings Certificates Act, 1959 and the rules under it. Each allows a nominee to be recorded and the office to pay the nominee and be discharged. Where there is no nominee, the office pays the legal heirs on the evidence its rules accept, which may be a succession certificate granted by the District Judge under the Indian Succession Act, 1925, or, below a figure the rules set, an affidavit and an indemnity. The order in which a Hindu's heirs inherit is set by the Hindu Succession Act, 1956, and other communities follow their own law. The Head Postmaster or the bank's branch manager decides the claim, and a claimant who is not satisfied can go to the senior officer of the office, or file a consumer complaint before the District Commission. A dispute among the heirs is decided by the civil court, and an appeal goes to the District Judge or to the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Chandigarh: The same Acts and rules apply to a post office or bank branch in the Union Territory, with a succession certificate granted by the District Judge, Chandigarh. A claimant who is not satisfied can go to the senior officer of the office, or file a consumer complaint before the District Commission serving the Union Territory. A dispute among the heirs is decided by the civil court at Chandigarh, with an appeal to the District Judge, Chandigarh, or to the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Reading costs nothing. Keeping a copy needs an account.

The opening of the draft is on this page as you answer it. Once every answer is in, the button below opens the whole draft, watermarked — still without an account. Printing it, or keeping a clean copy, is where an account is asked for. That is the whole arrangement.

A kept copy has to belong to somebody, and that is the reason for the account. There is nothing further to it.
