LEGAL BASIS
Punjab: A report of a lost article is a record kept at the police station within whose area the article was lost. It alleges no offence and is not a first information report; if the article was stolen, the police are told so and treat the matter as a complaint of theft instead. Offices that issue duplicates, such as a passport office or a licensing authority, commonly ask for the police report, but each decides for itself what it requires.
Chandigarh: The same applies in the Union Territory: the report is made at the police station in whose area the article was lost, alleges no offence, and is not a first information report. The office issuing the duplicate decides what it requires.
