A pure cancellation, transferring nothing back, is chargeable under Article 17 — a small fixed sum, needing two witnesses' attestation. Punjab prices only a POA's cancellation; Chandigarh has no cancellation row — ask the Sub-Registrar. A SEPARATE claim/share given up is a Release under Article 55 instead. Where the cancelled instrument was a completed sale/conveyance, the Sub-Registrar may charge the full reconveyance rate — 7.25% Punjab, 5% Chandigarh (3% lease rights), on the higher of consideration/Collector rate. Stamp before signing; unstamped is inadmissible until duty+penalty paid (s.35, s.17).
