When you need it

Each year, whoever gave a loan, or whoever took it, may want the figures written down: what the loan was, how much of it is still owing, and how much interest built up and was paid. This letter does that, for one stated year, and the other person signs at the foot to show they agree.

Both of you then hold the same paper for your records, including your tax records. Either the lender or the borrower can write it; you choose which in the questions. It helps with a family loan that has run for several years, with a loan where interest is paid, and when someone later asks what the position was in a given year. It is a confirmation of facts, not a tax certificate and not a fresh agreement. It does not change the loan. A borrower who signs it is also admitting the balance stated, which can matter for how long the lender has to sue; if that matters to you, take advice before signing. Not for creating a loan: use the Loan Agreement between Friends and Relatives. Not for recording a debt owed with no paper at all: use the Acknowledgement of Debt. Not for a payment: use the Loan Repayment Receipt and Final Settlement. Not for a loan from a bank or finance company, which issues its own certificate.

What follows is written for Punjab and Chandigarh. It states the position there rather than describing how it varies, so the amounts below are the ones that apply — worth confirming at the sub-registrar’s office, because rates change. If the property is anywhere else in India, none of this is yours.

Stamp duty

A letter that only confirms facts and is signed by the writer is not ordinarily stamped. The position can change if the Borrower signs the acknowledgement at the foot as an admission that the sums are owed, because the stamp law treats some acknowledgements of debt and some receipts as chargeable. Check with a stamp vendor or the Sub-Registrar whether a stamp is needed on the Borrower's signed acknowledgement in Punjab or Chandigarh, before relying on it.

Registration

Not registrable. It is a letter recording existing facts and creates no interest in property.

Notarisation

Not required. Notarisation is a useful extra only if the letter may later be relied on in a dispute, because it fixes the date.

Witnesses

Not required. The letter is a one-sided confirmation, with an acknowledgement by the other person.

Subject: Confirmation of loan, balance and interest for the year 2025-26

Dear Vikram Sethi,

  1. 1. I, Rajinder Kumar Sethi, am the Lender in the loan described below. I write to confirm its details for the year 2025-26, so that both of us hold the same figures for our records, including our tax records.
  1. 2. THE LOAN

2.1 A loan of ₹3,00,000 (Rupees Three Lakh only) was given by the Lender to the Borrower on 1 April 2026.

2.2 The loan is recorded in: Loan Agreement between Friends and Relatives dated 5 November 2025.

2.3 interest-free — the Borrower shall repay only the Loan Amount, with no interest.

  1. 3. THE POSITION FOR THE YEAR 2025-26

3.1 Principal outstanding at the start of the year: ₹3,00,000 (Rupees Three Lakh only).
3.2 Principal repaid during the year: ₹1,00,000 (Rupees One Lakh only).
3.3 Principal outstanding as at 2 April 2026: ₹2,00,000 (Rupees Two Lakh only).

  1. 4. CONFIRMATION

4.1 I confirm that the figures above are correct to the best of my knowledge and agree with my records.
4.2 If you find any difference, please tell me in writing within 15 days of receiving this letter. If I do not hear from you, I will take it that these figures are agreed between us.
4.3 This letter only confirms facts. It is not a new loan, does not change the terms of the loan, and is not a tax return or a tax certificate. Each of us is responsible for our own tax reporting.

Yours sincerely,
