Form 26: application for a duplicate certificate of registration (RC)

When the registration certificate (RC) of your vehicle has been lost, destroyed, completely written off, soiled, torn or mutilated, the owner (or an authorised dealer of registered vehicles) applies in Form 26 to the Registering Authority (the RTO) for a duplicate certificate. It is made in duplicate if the vehicle is held under a loan agreement, and in triplicate if the original registering authority is different. Duplicate RC can also be applied for online through Parivahan's Vahan service.

Issued by: Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (Parivahan), under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989

The form itself is in English, exactly as the issuing office prints it.

How to fill it in

  1. At "The Registering Authority", write the RTO where the vehicle is registered. Write the vehicle's registration mark, and strike out the words that do not apply from "lost/destroyed/completely written-off/soiled/torn/mutilated".
  2. On the dotted line, describe the circumstances in which the certificate was lost, destroyed or damaged. The Note on the form says full particulars of the circumstances must be given in a case of loss or destruction.
  3. Read the declarations: the registration has not been suspended or cancelled, and the circumstances are true. Strike out "written-off/soiled/torn/mutilated" if the certificate was lost; if you still hold a damaged certificate, enclose it. For a lost or destroyed certificate, the form declares that it has not been impounded by any agency or suspended or cancelled by any authority.
  4. Strike out the line that does not apply: the vehicle is not held under any hire-purchase, lease or hypothecation agreement and is free from encumbrances, or it is held under one. Then write your mobile number, the date, and sign (the form allows signature, digital signature or e-signature of the owner or an authorised dealer of registered vehicles).
  5. If a loan is running, write the financier's name where the form says the vehicle is held under an agreement, and strike out "granted/refused" to show whether the financier gave a No Objection Certificate. If it was refused, a declaration under section 51(8) is needed. The owner then signs or puts a thumb impression with name, full address and date.
  6. On page 2, the financier fills the "Consent of the financier" box (No objection or Objection, with reasons) and signs. Leave the "Office Endorsement" and the specimen signature boxes: the RTO fills the endorsement.
