You have moved abroad, and the savings or current account you opened as a resident in India now has to be changed to an NRO account. Your bank will want a signed letter telling it your change of status, your overseas address and your contact details.

REQUEST TO CONVERT RESIDENT ACCOUNT TO NRO ACCOUNT

Dear Sir/Madam,

Sub: Change of residential status, and conversion of savings Account No. XXXXXXXX4567 to a Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) account (Customer ID 12345678)

1. I hold the account named above with your branch as a resident customer. I have moved out of India and, since 1 April 2026, I have been living in Canada for employment. I am working there on a long-term contract. I am therefore now a person resident outside India for the purposes of the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 and the rules of the Reserve Bank of India.

2. I request you to change the status of this account in your records from resident to non-resident, and to convert it into an NRO account, as the current rules of the Reserve Bank of India and your bank's own policy permit. I understand that from then on the account will be run under the rules for NRO accounts.

3. My details for your records are: passport number N3456789; visa or residence permit Work permit valid to 30 June 2029; email harjinder@example.com; telephone +1 647 555 0123. Please send all statements and messages about this account to my address abroad and this email. The account is held jointly with Mrs Gurpreet Kaur (wife); please tell me what you need from the joint holder.

4. Please also tell me what happens to any fixed or recurring deposits, standing instructions, cards, cheque books and internet or mobile banking linked to this account, and whether any of them must be closed, converted or re-issued because of the change of status.

5. I enclose: Copy of passport and visa, proof of address abroad, copy of PAN. I will give any KYC form, tax-residency self-certification or other document your bank asks for on a change of status. From the date of this letter I will treat the account as an NRO account.

6. If my residential status changes again, I will tell you in writing.
