When you need it

The record of what was given at the wedding. The list names each present given to the bride and each given to the bridegroom, what it is worth roughly, who gave it and how they are related. The bride and the bridegroom sign it, and so does a member of each family.

The law against dowry treats presents given freely at a wedding, without any demand, differently from dowry, and it expects such presents to be recorded in a list kept for the purpose. A signed list also helps both families later: it shows what the bride received as her own and what was given to the bridegroom, so there is no dispute about ornaments, cash or household goods if the marriage is ever questioned. It is not a receipt for any dowry, and nothing on it should have been demanded. Not for a stridhan inventory kept by the bride alone, and not an agreement between the families about property. Not a substitute for a marriage certificate: the Marriage Registration Application in this library registers the marriage itself.

What follows is written for Punjab and Chandigarh. It states the position there rather than describing how it varies, so the amounts below are the ones that apply — worth confirming at the sub-registrar’s office, because rates change. If the property is anywhere else in India, none of this is yours.

Stamp duty

This is a list, not an instrument that creates or transfers a right, so no stamp duty is payable on it in Punjab or in Chandigarh. Plain paper is enough.

Registration

Not registrable and not required to be registered. Each family keeps a signed copy.

Notarisation

Not required. Signing it in front of the two witnesses, and keeping a photograph of the items, is enough for most purposes.

Witnesses

The bride, the bridegroom and one member of each family sign. Two adult witnesses are sensible; give each one's name and address beside the signature.
