When you need it

Use this on the day a used car, motorcycle or scooter is handed over, to give the Seller a signed receipt for the money and to give both sides a short record of the state of the vehicle, the keys, the papers and the transfer forms handed over. It is a one-sitting handover paper and does not replace a sale agreement; if you want the full terms of sale, use the Car / Bike Sale Agreement on this site, and use the RC Transfer Affidavit if the RTO asks for a sworn statement.

Answer the questions from the Registration Certificate, the insurance policy and the vehicle itself. Papers to attach: a copy of the Registration Certificate, the insurance policy, the pollution certificate, each party's identity proof and photographs of the vehicle. Stamp paper and registration are not needed for this note. The Buyer then reports the transfer to the Registering Authority on Forms 29 and 30 under section 50 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and the note goes with those forms. Keep signed copies.

What follows is written for Punjab and Chandigarh. It states the position there rather than describing how it varies, so the amounts below are the ones that apply — worth confirming at the sub-registrar’s office, because rates change. If the property is anywhere else in India, none of this is yours.

Stamp duty

Punjab and Chandigarh: no stamp duty is charged on this note. It is a receipt and a record of handing over, and it does not itself transfer the vehicle, which is movable property that passes by sale and delivery. A receipt for money is not a conveyance, and no article of the stamp schedule of either place is aimed at a vehicle sale. If a revenue stamp on a receipt is wanted for a large sum, check with the Sub-Registrar. Print it on plain paper.

Registration

Punjab and Chandigarh: not registrable. Section 17(1)(b) of the Registration Act, 1908 reaches documents about immovable property, and a vehicle is not that. The entry that matters is the new owner's name in the vehicle register kept by the Registering Authority under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, made on Forms 29 and 30.

Notarisation

Punjab and Chandigarh: notarisation is not required, but a notary may attest the signatures if the Buyer's financier or the Registering Authority asks for it.

Witnesses

Punjab and Chandigarh: witnesses are not required by law for a receipt. Two witnesses are provided for below because a handover is often disputed on what was handed over and in what state.

1. Why this paper is signed. The Seller has sold the vehicle described below to the Buyer and has handed it over today. This paper is the Seller's receipt for the money and the record of what was handed over and in what state. It is signed at the time of handing over, by both of them.

2. The vehicle. The vehicle is a car, make and model Maruti Suzuki Swift VXi, colour white, year of manufacture 2,017, fuel petrol. Its registration number is PB10 AB 1234, its chassis number is MA3EWB81S00123456 and its engine number is K12MN1234567. The Registration Certificate stands in the name of Harpreet Singh Gill.

3. The price. The agreed price of the vehicle is ₹4,50,000 (Rupees Four Lakh Fifty Thousand only). The Seller acknowledges that ₹4,50,000 (Rupees Four Lakh Fifty Thousand only) has been received today by bank transfer. The payment reference is UTR 4123456789012.

4. The position on payment. The price has been paid in full today and nothing remains due from the Buyer.

5. Delivery. The Seller delivered the vehicle to the Buyer at the Seller's house in Model Town, Ludhiana on 2 April 2026 at about 11 am. From the moment of delivery the vehicle is in the Buyer's possession and use.

6. State of the vehicle at delivery. The odometer reads 48,250 kilometres. The Buyer has seen and tried the vehicle, and its state at delivery is this: Body and paint in good order, four tyres about half worn, engine starts and runs smoothly, air conditioner works, no leaks seen.

7. Defects the Seller has told the Buyer about. A scratch on the rear bumper and a weak left rear speaker. The Buyer has accepted the vehicle with those defects.

8. Keys and accessories handed over. Number of keys or key fobs handed over: 2. Accessories and fittings handed over with the vehicle: Spare wheel, jack, toolkit, floor mats and a music system.

9. Papers handed over. The Seller handed over these original papers: Registration Certificate, insurance policy, pollution certificate, service booklet and the owner's manual. Papers the Seller has not handed over, and when they will be handed over, are: None.

10. The transfer forms. The Seller has signed Forms 29 and 30 today and handed them over, and the Buyer will file them with the Registering Authority.

11. Loan or hypothecation. The vehicle is free of any loan or hypothecation, and the Registration Certificate shows none.
