When you need it

A household in Punjab or Chandigarh is hiring a person directly to look after an elderly family member or a child — a full-time attendant, a live-in nanny or an ayah on day duty — and wants the terms in writing. The first choice is who is being cared for, and the second is whether the person lives in or goes home each day.

It covers duties, hours, rest, pay, leave, the safeguards that matter in care work, and how either side can end it. Care work involves trust in a home and, often, a person who cannot speak up for themselves. This agreement asks that identity be checked, that medicine be given only as the doctor has written, that the attendant does no medical procedure he or she is not trained for, and that you name an emergency contact. It does not replace a police verification; get that done separately. Not for a driver, cook, maid or gardener — see the Driver / Domestic Help Agreement, which also covers a nanny in a general way. Use this one when care of a specific person is the main job. Not for a nurse engaged through a hospital or an agency, who works under that body's terms.
