You filed your income tax return or refund claim after the last date, and you want the authority to excuse the delay so it is accepted and processed. This is your own letter giving the dates, the reason and your papers. The law decides who can excuse a delay, in which cases and by when.

What follows is written for Punjab and Chandigarh. It states the position there rather than describing how it varies, so the amounts below are the ones that apply — worth confirming at the sub-registrar’s office, because rates change. If the property is anywhere else in India, none of this is yours.

REQUEST TO EXCUSE (CONDONE) A DELAY

Date: 2 April 2026. To: The Principal Commissioner of Income Tax, Chandigarh.

Subject: Request to condone delay for Assessment year 2025-26. PAN: ABCDE1234F.

I, Balwinder Singh, of House 40, Sector 21, Panchkula, ask you to excuse a delay. The matter in which the delay occurred is my income tax return for Assessment year 2025-26. The last date allowed was 1 April 2026. It was filed, or will be filed, on 2 April 2026. A refund of ₹18,000 (Rupees Eighteen Thousand only) is claimed.

The reasons for the delay: I was in hospital from June to September and my accountant could not file without my papers.

The delay was not deliberate. I enclose these papers in support: hospital discharge summary, acknowledgement of the return.

I ask that the delay be excused and that the filing be accepted and processed as if made in time, and that any refund due be processed. I understand that the law decides who may excuse a delay, in which cases and by what time, and that the request may have to be made online or in a prescribed manner. If you are not the proper authority, I ask that this be passed to the proper authority, and I will make the request in the prescribed manner if I am told how.

This is my own letter written in my own words. The statements above are true and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief.
