When you need it

You received an income tax notice or intimation pointing to a small difference, such as interest or tax deducted shown differently from your return, and you want to answer it in writing. This is your own reply letter with your explanation and enclosures.

What follows is written for Punjab and Chandigarh. It states the position there rather than describing how it varies, so the amounts below are the ones that apply — worth confirming at the sub-registrar’s office, because rates change. If the property is anywhere else in India, none of this is yours.

REPLY TO A TAX NOTICE ABOUT A DIFFERENCE IN RECORDS

Date: 2 April 2026. To: Centralised Processing Centre.

Subject: Reply to the notice as printed on your notice dated 1 April 2026 for Assessment year 2026-27. PAN: ABCDE1234F.

I, Navdeep Gill, received the notice above. It points to a difference of this kind: interest or other income shown in the department's records but different from my return. The notice shows ₹12,500 (Rupees Twelve Thousand Five Hundred only). My records show ₹8,500 (Rupees Eight Thousand Five Hundred only).

My explanation: The bank counted interest on a deposit that matured in the previous year.

My position: I do not agree with the difference, for the reasons given in this reply.

I enclose: bank interest certificate, Form 26AS extract.

I am replying within the time the notice allows or, if I am late, I ask that my reply be taken on record. I ask that the difference be corrected or the matter closed on the basis of this reply, and that I be given a chance to be heard before any adverse order is made.

This is my own reply letter written in my own words. The tax portal may ask for the response in its own online format, in which case I will respond there with the same particulars. The statements above are true and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief.

PERSONAL DATA NOTICE

This notice is given under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.

Personal data in this document is collected only to answer the tax notice and support the taxpayer's explanation, communicate about that purpose, verify the information expressly supplied, and retain an evidentiary record.

The record will be held by Navdeep Gill and may be shown only to the taxpayer, the tax office or processing centre that sent the notice, and the taxpayer's tax adviser or accountant, and to a statutory or tax authority where disclosure is required for the matter recorded here.

If the matter does not go ahead, or this document is withdrawn before it is used, the personal data will be retained for 90 days from that decision and then erased. If it is used, the record will be retained for 12 months after the matter ends and then erased, except for a record that a statute requires to be kept for a longer named period.

A person named in this document may withdraw consent for future consent-based processing, request correction or erasure when the stated purpose has ended, or raise a grievance by writing to customersupport.kaagazaat@gmail.com. The record-holder should acknowledge and respond within 30 days.

Data minimisation: this document deliberately does not require a full Aadhaar number, Aadhaar-card copy, passwords or unrelated identity material. Detailed KYC should remain in the separate KYC workflow; tax or payment identifiers are collected here only where the whole purpose of this document requires them.
