When you need it

You have received a traffic challan, on the road or as an e-challan on your phone, and you believe it is wrong: you were not driving, the vehicle was not there, the details on it are mistaken, or the fine was already paid. This is your own written objection to the authority that issued it.

It names the challan and the vehicle, gives your ground in plain words, and asks the authority to cancel the challan or, failing that, to hear you and let the matter go to a court. Act at once. A challan usually has a time within which it must be paid, contested or sent to court, and what happens after that time (a higher amount, a court summons, an obstacle in selling or renewing the vehicle's papers) depends on the rules the authority applies. Many authorities now take a contest through their website or a virtual court; check the challan itself for the route and use this letter as the text of your objection or as a covering letter. Not for a challan you accept and wish to pay or compound (use the payment route on the challan). Not for a dispute with another driver after an accident (use Road Accident Settlement Deed).

What follows is written for Punjab and Chandigarh. It states the position there rather than describing how it varies, so the amounts below are the ones that apply — worth confirming at the sub-registrar’s office, because rates change. If the property is anywhere else in India, none of this is yours.

Stamp duty

No stamp duty is stated here for a letter of objection; it creates or transfers no right in property. Keep it on plain paper unless the person who asks for it names the article and the amount.

Registration

Not registrable under the Registration Act, 1908: it concerns a movable vehicle, not land or buildings. Any change to the vehicle’s registration record is made separately, at the Registering Authority.

Notarisation

Not required. If you add a sworn statement or an affidavit to your objection, that part is sworn before an Oath Commissioner or a Notary; carry original photo ID.

Witnesses

No witness is needed; you sign alone. A person who saw the facts may give a written statement and sign it, which you can enclose.

SUBJECT: Objection to challan no. CH2610001234 dated 1 April 2026 against vehicle PB10 AB 1234

Sir / Madam,

  1. 1. The challan. Challan no. CH2610001234 dated 1 April 2026 has been issued against the vehicle bearing registration number PB10 AB 1234, stating the offence of: Crossing the stop line at a red light, at Sector 17/18 light point, Chandigarh.
  1. 2. My objection. I, Sandeep Kaur, of House No. 120, Phase 5, SAS Nagar (Mohali), Punjab, do not accept this challan and do not admit the offence stated. My ground is: I was not the person driving the vehicle at that time.
  1. 3. The facts. On the date stated I was in Ludhiana at a family function; my car was parked at home. The photograph with the challan shows a car of a different make.
  1. 4. What I ask. I request you to cancel the challan. I also ask for a copy of the record, notice or photograph on which the challan is based, so that I can answer it.
  1. 5. Time. This objection is made within the time allowed on the challan, as far as I understand it. If any day has been lost, I ask that it be excused, because I am objecting as soon as I could. Please tell me in writing the next date and place of hearing, and what to do if the challan has gone to a court.
  1. 6. Enclosed: Copy of the challan; copy of the RC; hotel bill dated the same day; receipt of the earlier payment.

You may contact me on 9876511111.

Yours faithfully,
