When you need it

You are applying to study abroad and the visa officer has to be satisfied that you can pay for the course and living costs from money that is really yours and your family's. This letter says how much is needed, where each part comes from (savings, family, a loan), how the money was built up, what any large recent deposit is, and how the education loan will be repaid.

Not for: the request to your bank for the loan (use the Education Loan Request and Margin Declaration), a co-applicant's promise to the bank (use the Education Loan Co-applicant Undertaking), a parent's undertaking to pay (use the Study Visa Sponsorship Affidavit), or the index of papers (use the Financial Documents Index for a Visa File).

What follows is written for Punjab and Chandigarh. It states the position there rather than describing how it varies, so the amounts below are the ones that apply — worth confirming at the sub-registrar’s office, because rates change. If the property is anywhere else in India, none of this is yours.

Stamp duty

Not a stamp-dutiable instrument — a letter, not an agreement or a conveyance.

Registration

Not registrable.

Notarisation

Not legally required for the letter itself. Sign and date it. Some offices want a parent's or co-applicant's signature as well, or the sanction letter attached; the checklist says which.

Witnesses

Not required.
