When you need it

Your name or date of birth is wrong on your Aadhaar card — a spelling error made at enrolment, a name that changed on marriage, or a date of birth recorded from an estimate rather than a document — and the Unique Identification Authority of India's own correction process, through the Self Service Update Portal, the myAadhaar portal, or an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, asks you to submit a document it accepts as proof, together with a signed declaration of what the correct particulars are and how the error arose. Aadhaar enrolment and update is governed by the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016 and the regulations made under it, which apply identically wherever in India the correction is made; what differs between Punjab and Chandigarh is only where this declaration is notarised, if the update centre you use asks for a notarised copy rather than a plain signed one. Not for: adding or correcting a mobile number or email address, which needs no supporting document and no declaration; correcting an address, which Aadhaar allows on a simple self-declaration without independent proof in defined circumstances; or a first Aadhaar enrolment, which is a different process entirely.

Where the update centre or a notary insists on stamp paper before attesting it — some do, as a matter of local practice rather than law — it is bought as a non-judicial stamp paper of Rs. 10, the smallest denomination generally sold at a treasury, an SHCIL e-stamp counter or an authorised stamp vendor in Punjab or in Chandigarh. Registration

This declaration is submitted to the Unique Identification Authority of India for its own records and is not an instrument the Registration Act, 1908 requires to be registered, in Punjab or in Chandigarh. Keep the acknowledgement and the Update Request Number the portal or the centre issues — that number, not this declaration, is what tracks the correction.

Notarisation

The Self Service Update Portal and the myAadhaar portal accept this declaration with a plain signature, uploaded together with the supporting document — no notarisation is asked for online. An Aadhaar Seva Kendra or update centre, or a bank or post office acting as an enrolment agency, may ask for it to be notarised before a Notary Public or an Oath Commissioner appointed for Punjab or for the Union Territory of Chandigarh; ask the particular centre before the appointment.
